About FOMO Sapiens

FOMO Sapiens is a top business podcast that uncovers how entrepreneurial leaders in business, politics, and culture make personal and professional decisions in a world of overwhelming choice.

About Patrick J. McGinnis

Patrick J. McGinnis is a venture capitalist and the author of Fear of Missing Out: Practical Decision-Making in a World of Overwhelming Choice. Patrick coined the term FOMO in 2003 in the student newspapers of Harvard Business School; it was added to the dictionary ten years later. He has been featured in The New York Times, Politico, The Financial Times, The Guardian, and Inc, and gave a popular 2019 TED Talk on how to make faster decisions that has surpassed 1.5 million views. Originally from Maine, Patrick has visited over 100 countries and now lives in NYC.

THE BASICS:

  • Use a microphone or headset (please, no AirPods). If you need to upgrade your audio, I recommend this inexpensive headset that sounds shockingly good on Amazon.
  • Connect over a laptop or desktop (no iPhones/iPads).
  • Record in a quiet room (windows closed) with as little echo as possible (some ways to minimize echo are carpeting and recording near a bed or an open closet).
  • Reserve up to 60 minutes for taping.
  • FOMO Sapiens will be recorded on video and will be published on the different platforms on that format. We will also use portions of that video to promote the episode on social media.
  • Consider keeping your answers to questions to around 2-3 minutes maximum and please no swearing. 😃

How to Connect:

1.- Plugin your microphone/headset to your computer and select this equipment as your default input/output sound settings on your computer.

2.- Open the link in the email or calendar invite sent by Squadcast.fm.

3.- You are now in the Green Room. Select the Microphone, Headphones, & Camera that you will use and click the gold “Join Session” button.

4.- If you are connected but are having trouble hearing or seeing Patrick, verify/adjust your settings by clicking the settings menu on your video window.

5.- Prior to the recording, we will share a PDF with detailed instructions.

6.- If all else fails, please call Patrick 917-886-8947.

Camera tips position

  • Camera Position: Place the webcam at eye level or slightly above to achieve a natural and flattering angle.
  • Lighting: Avoid backlighting situations and ensure good frontal lighting so your face is well-lit and visible.
  • Tidy Background: Choose a tidy and neutral background to avoid distractions. Avoid overly busy or cluttered backgrounds.
  • Appropriate Distance: Make sure the camera is at an appropriate distance, close enough to see you clearly but not so close that your context is lost.
  • Alignment: Align the camera so it’s centered on your face and avoid excessively tilted angles.
  • Pre-Call Testing: Conduct a pre-test to ensure the camera, lighting, and background are suitable before starting the video call.
